The buses were the visible part. The part that actually ran the company was a system that found people who needed to get from one town to another, sold them a seat, took their money and sent them their ticket, without anyone picking up a phone. He was not really in the bus business. He was in the business of building marketing that works while you sleep.

Why we build it small

When Hamish was eight, his parents went house-hunting in Birmingham. One of the houses came with a donkey. The children campaigned hard, the parents bought the sensible house down the road for about £1,000 less, and the house with the donkey would be worth twice as much today. It was still the right decision on the information they had.

Years later he bought on the Grey Lynn ridge, fifty metres up, partly because he had checked the elevation. On 27 January 2023 it flooded badly enough that engineers had to work out whether the foundations could be saved. Good decision, good information, bad outcome.
